Is talking about mental health still considered as taboo in our society, people who are dealing with problems like anxiety disorders and depression is considered as mentally ill.
Recently Bollywood super star Anushka Sharma was very optimistic and open about talking on this topic. In January, actor Anushka Sharma opened up about seeking treatment for anxiety. In an interview with Vogue magazine, she described it as a biological problem that required acceptance and, more importantly, needed to be talked about openly. “What’s the need to hide it?” she said, adding that there have been cases of DEPRESSION in her family.
“Celebrities talking about their battle with anxiety and depression is a brave thing to do because it helps shed the stigma that shrouds such conditions.in India, any mental issue, even if it is simple anxiety, is seen as some kind of mental and emotional weakness, and so it is ignored outright,” says Sakshi Bhatia, clinical psychologist, Columbia Asia Hospital, Pune. Particularly anxiety, she adds, is misunderstood and often underplayed deliberately. It’s referred to as moodiness, tiredness or trouble at work—but seldom accepted as anxiety. “The minute it is called anxiety, the black placard about it being a mental disorder comes up,” says Bhatia.
“Anxiety is characterized by a sense of fear and doubt about what is going to happen in the future, whereas in DEPRESSION there is a feeling of extreme sadness coupled with listless, extreme negative emotions, suicidal thoughts and maybe myriad other physical symptoms like chronic fatigue,” says Bhatia.
